More than 60% of respondents in the 1997 Risk Behavior Survey said spiritual values influenced daily decisions. Just 22.5% said spiritual values never or seldom play a role in their decision making.

7. Number of Community-Oriented, Nonreligious Events Hosted in Churches

The Survey of Spiritual Leaders asked: How many events without a spiritual focus are hosted by your church/organization and involve community members not affiliated with your organization?

Respondents report about 1,317 such events. This number includes hosting Gray Gourmet meals, Scouts, day care, Alcoholics Anonymous, SHARE Colorado, and more.

8. Number of Interfaith Activities or Projects

Talking about common problems and issues may help to mobilize resources to resolve problems. Half of respondents told us they network with other spiritual leaders to brainstorm and solve problems.

Community response: "If we remove faith or spirituality from our lives, we will also remove health from individuals and the community."

Opportunities for action:

  • Promote spirituality as an essential part of community life.
  • Encourage interfaith celebration.
  • Provide youth oriented activities.
