CHAPTER 7: HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

CHRONIC ILLNESS AND DEATH (PART 1)

39. Leading Causes of Death

Cancer has surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death in Mesa County. This trend is due, in part, to our aging population and high rates of smoking. Smoking also contributes to the morbidity of heart disease and COPD (chronic obstructive lung disease).

41. Malignant Neoplasm (Cancer) Death Rate

The Healthy People 2000 goal is to have no more than 130 deaths per 100,000 population. The age-adjusted death rate is consistently higher for Mesa County than for the rest of Colorado. Malignant neoplasms include a broad range of common and rare cancers. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States.

More residents die from lung cancer than from any other type of cancer. Lung cancer deaths occur most frequently in the 65+ age group (188 deaths in 1996), with the 45-64 age group coming in next (71 in 1996). The same trend is seen in female breast cancer with 12 deaths in the 65+ age group and three in the 45-64 age group. Cancer is highest among Caucasians.

42. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Death Rate

The Healthy People 2000 goal is to slow the rise in deaths to a rate of no more than 25 per 100,000 people.

COPD is a disease of the lungs. It is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and the third leading cause in Mesa County. Smoking is significantly associated with this disease.

43. Cerebrovascular Disease (CVD) Death Rate

The Healthy People 2000 goal is to reduce deaths from stroke to no more than 20 per 100,000 people. Cerebrovascular disease includes stroke, aneurysm, transient ischemic attacks, and others. Mesa County's death rate is similar to Colorado's and somewhat less than the nation's.
