On September 8, 2004, Grand Valley citizens gathered at Two Rivers Convention Center to
evaluate a set of recommendations on the difficult issue of healthcare. We wanted to send a message to the current
public officials and 2004 candidates to view healthcare coverage as a priority in the coming year. Participants
discussed options at round tables and then gave their opinion using instantaneous electronic keypad
technology.
Walk down Main Street. One out of every 5th person you see has little or no healthcare coverage.
The uninsured are unable to access healthcare or wait longer to do so. Either way, they become sicker and
consequently the costs are more in the long run for both the uninsured and the insured. These costs are the
hub of our national healthcare crisis which affects everyone. What alternatives are there to the current state
of disappearing healthcare? Can we, together, develop policy options that will make a difference?
