By estimates, four out of five people who commit suicide have tried to warn others of their intent through verbal statements, written notes, demonstrating a preoccupation with death, or other behavior indicating that they are planning to end their life.
Training can help us see and respond to these invitations to help. It can provide:
- The confidence to ask about suicide if we are concerned about someone's safety.
- The tools to help prevent the immediate risk of suicide.
The Training
A.S.I.S.T. is a two-day workshop offered each month. It is designed to give participants knowledge and skills that will help them know how to intervene when they fear someone might be at risk. The emphasis of the A.S.I.S.T. workshop is on suicide first-aid, on helping a person at risk stay safe and seek further help.
At the workshop you'll learn how to:
- Recognize opportunities to help.
- Reach out and offer support.
- Estimate the risk of suicide.
- Apply a model for suicide intervention.
- Link people with community resources.
